Christmas in Ida this weekend
Thousands of people are expected to converge on Ida this weekend for the Christmas in Ida Festival.
The most popular event is the Christmas in Ida Parade of Lights at 7 p.m.
THE EVENT
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the festival. The Christmas in Ida Festival, a division of the Ida Civic Club, began in 1982, sponsored by local area service organizations and businesses to share holiday cheer. Throughout the years, the festival and parade expanded into an event that consistently draws more than 36,000 visitors.
NOT JUST A PARADE
Other events take place, starting at 7 p.m. Friday with the Boychoir of Ann Arbor concert at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Ida Christmas Mall and Ida High School Class of 2009 auction at the heated tent at the Ida Township Fire Hall is also planned for Friday night.
On Saturday, a full day of activity will start at 9:30 a.m. when Santa Claus arrives by fire truck to the Ida High School parking lot.
Craft shows, story time at the library, Santa's Zoo, a children's lunch and performances are scheduled.
DISNEY CONNECTIONS
AM Radio Disney and Hasbro will bring Radio Disney's Jingle Jam Tour to the festival Saturday.
The free concert will include Radio Disney hits and holiday songs, headlined by Keke Palmer with a special appearance by Drew Seeley. Radio Disney artists Everlife will kick off the 2½ hour concert.
The Radio Disney Jingle Jam 2007 concert will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Ida Township Hall parking lot, 3016 Lewis Ave.
PARKING & SHUTTLE
Parking on Lewis between Ida East and Ida West Rds. and Ida St. will be prohibited.
Public parking lots are available on Lewis Ave., Ida East Rd., Southwick St., Van Ackin St., St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ida West Rd. - two blocks west of Lewis and on Ida East Rd., east of Lewis. Additionally, parking will be available on Lewis south of Ida East at Schumaker Brothers Construction.
Visitors are encouraged to use the shuttle service from parking lots at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church located at Lewis and Dunbar Rds. and at Hamlin's Auction House and Cornerstone Baptist Church located at Lewis and Albain Rds. Bus shuttle service will be in operation between 3:30 and 11 p.m. Lewis Ave. will remain open for local and festival traffic.
PARADE OF LIGHTS
The parade will begin at Ida Public Schools and continue to Ida St., Mill St., Ida East Rd. and Lewis Ave. and end back at the school. The parade route will be closed at 6:30 p.m. Because of large crowds, event organizers and emergency response personnel have requested the closure of the parking lanes.
While in the Village of Ida, tune to 92.9 FM for a 24-hour public service announcement.
THE PETS
The Holiday Hounds on Parade will be making its second appearance at 2:15 p.m. Saturday. It features dogs, small or large, walking through the village.
CROWNS
Students at Ida High School nominated candidates for the festival's prince and princess titles. The royal couple will be introduced by Miss Monroe County Rachel McCleery and crowned by Santa and Mrs. Claus at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Ida Township Community Center.
CRAFT SHOW
Nearly 200 crafters and vendors will come together for a large show at Ida High School and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with $1 admission. Also, the Ida Civic Club will have a poinsettia plant and souvenir sale of Christmas in Ida sweatshirts, ornaments, cups, and Christmas music CDs.
Crafters and vendors will be located throughout the downtown area in heated tents and in the Ida Christmas Mall, located in the heated big top tent. Vendors will remain open through the parade. At the craft show, the Country Acres 4H Club of Ida will be collecting hats and coats, which will be donated to needy families. Stuffed animals will be accepted for young hospice patients.
