TEMPERANCE - The body of a 45-year-old man was found yesterday in his burning home in rural Bedford Township, authorities said.
Warren Montri was pronounced dead after his body was found near the bed in a rear bedroom of the home at 591 East Rauch Rd., Monroe County sheriff's Detective Tom Redmond said
An autopsy will be performed by the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office to make a positive identification and determine the cause of death.
The fire was reported about 8 a.m. when a motorist saw flames.
Detective Redmond said firefighters determined that Mr. Montri, who lived alone, was inside because both of his vehicles were parked in the driveway.
Charlene Otto, a neighbor, said her son went to the house, banged on the door, and called for Mr. Montri to come outside before firefighters arrived.
It took nearly three hours for firefighters from Bedford, Erie, and Ida townships to extinguish the blaze, which investigators believe started in the living room.
Bedford Township Fire Chief John Bofia said flames were shooting from the roof of the one-story ranch dwelling when the first crews arrived.
Neighbors said Mr. Montri recently separated from his wife, and that he purchased the home in August after renting it for several years.
Luetta Larrow, 85, an aunt of the victim, said her family was trying to cope with the loss of Mr. Montri so close to the holidays. "I can't say anything but good stuff about him."
Chief Bofia said he had not put a value on the damage, but said the home was a total loss. No cause has been determined.
