Ida's quick-change artist
IDA - Nic Jobe has never had a line like this.
Twenty-two points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocked shots, 1 bloody nose and 2 uniform numbers.
The Ida star took the floor Friday night wearing No. 42. He left the court wearing No. 44 following a bloody nose and a quick jersey change. That was just one of the many problems Ida had to solve in order to beat Dundee 64-51 and remain undefeated.
"That was a physical game,'' said Jobe, who bloodied his uniform in the third quarter. After a trip to the locker room to stop the bleeding and a jersey switch, he returned in the fourth period with Ida clinging to a 43-39 lead.
It wasn't exactly Willis Reed limping out of the locker room to rescue the New York Knicks, but Jobe immediately sparked a 6-0 run.
"When he was out, they got a little rattled,'' Dundee coach Doug Hand said. "He's become the leader I always thought he would be. He makes his teammates better.''
"Nic showed how important he is to our team,'' Ida coach Mike Albring said. "He handles the ball well and is hard to double-team. He's an outstanding passer. He's the whole package.''
And he's a quick-change artist.
Jobe put on No. 44, returned to the court and hit a driving jumper. Then he assisted on Jared Locke's basket. Then Dustin Sielski fed Jared Janssen for another basket and Ida had a 10-point lead.
The Blue Streaks are 4-0 and survived perhaps their stiffest test so far. They won even though Jobe was injured, starter Matt Grodi watched in street clothes because of a broken wrist and the Sielski brothers, Robbie and Dustin, both were limited by foul trouble.
Grodi is Ida's only senior starter. Locke took his spot and was productive with 12 points, including 7 of Ida's first 11.
"Jared stepped up and did some good things,'' Albring said. "We had to overcome a lot of things. To the kids credit, they did.''
Tyler Donahoe pulled down 8 rebounds and Janssen and Mitch Tyra both scored 7 points off the bench.
"We're deep. We have a lot of weapons,'' Jobe said.
Kyle Scheich scored 18 points for Dundee, but he was the only double-figure scorer as the Vikings fell to 1-3.
"We've lost to three pretty good teams,'' Hand said of Ida, St. Mary Catholic Central and Jefferson. "The effort was there. We never gave up and I was proud of that.''
Dundee led 10-6 when Ida scored the next 9 points. The Blue Streaks never trailed again and led by as much as 13 points, but Dundee kept battling back.
"To Dundee's credit, they did a lot of things to shake things up,'' Albring said. "This was one of the most physical games we've had in a long time.''
Forty-four fouls were called and Jobe wasn't the only bloody player. Dundee's Craig Scheich had to leave the game because he was bleeding from the mouth.
Ida captured the JV game 61-42 as Kyle Vandecaveye scored 18 points and Ronnie Thomas added 14. Dundee got 13 from Ryan Gerth.
