IDA - The Ida volleyball team may have set a record for most great comebacks without winning a championship Saturday.
Dexter repeated as champion of the Ida Invitational with a crowd-pleasing 25-17, 23-25, 15-13 victory over the home team in the finals.
The Blue Streaks were outplayed in the first game and were all but given up for dead when they trailed 20-12 in the second.
But sophomore Kari Honomichl helped Ida turn a 21-15 deficit into a 24-21 lead with nine unanswered points. Honomichl had six kills and a block during the run, and Brittany Jenkins closed out the game with a kill.
Ida fell behind 11-5 in game three, again rallied to deadlock things at 12-12 but eventually succumbed on a pair of hitting errors.
"I'm proud of these girls. They did a great job today," said coach Eric Flotow. "It was tough. Dexter blocked everything we were putting up there, and they were scrappy. When they kept blocking us, I said, ‘You guys, we're going to have to look for some holes.' "
Honomichl did just that with the Blue Streaks facing elimination. Sophomore setter Ashley Begeman kept getting her the ball and Honomichl kept finding a hole.
Three teams were fairly dominant throughout the day in the 10-team tournament. Dexter, Ida and Erie Mason all went 7-1 in pool; Brooklyn Columbia Central was 5-3; Whiteford 4-4; Dundee and Quincy 3-5; Jefferson 2-6, and New Boston Huron and Ypsilanti Lincoln 1-7.
Ida swept Columbia Central 25-15, 25-23 in the semifinals with the help of some great serving by Sam Songalewski. Mason lost its semifinal match to Dexter 25-11, 25-21.
Dexter is 20-11-3.
"Those guys are a great team," Flotow said. "They beat Clinton in the Saline Tournament."
Ida (14-7-5) got impressive play from Jenkins and Songalewski - its only two senior regulars - throughout the day. Begeman finished the day with 108 assists, Honomichl had 53 kills and Kayla Spotts 49 kills.
Lenawee County Athletic Association foes Ida and Mason could have met in the finals. Both teams swept Lincoln, Jefferson and Quincy in pool play. They split their own head-to-head pool match with Mason, winning the first game 25-20 and Ida taking the second 25-14.
"Today was the best we've played all year," said Mason coach Kim Rector. "Confidence is building. Our hitting was all spread out, which is nice."
Brooke Hearn led with 28 kills, Chaz Jablonski added 20 kills, Kodie Paxton 19 and Jade Cunningham 15. Kelly Cousino had 85 assists and junior libero Stacey Strobel was 55-for-57 passing with 48 digs.
Whiteford swept Huron, lost to Dexter and split with Dundee and Columbia Central.
"I have no complaints about today. I'm very pleased," said Whiteford coach Kathy Albers. "We're learning with each tournament. Dexter is a very good team and so is Columbia Central. We have not played them, and I like playing new teams."
Chelsea Brighton had 24 kills and 30 digs; Alyssa White 57 assists, 11 kills and 23 digs; Kim Lambert 52 digs; Megan Prange 16 kills and Lizzy Hauser 15 kills for the Bobcats.
Dundee split it first three matches with Huron, Whiteford and Columbia Central before being swept by Dexter. Emily Schroeder and Katie Salenbien played well all day for the Vikings.
Jefferson found itself shorthanded when setter Katie Gedelian and McKenna Klemz were out with the flu, Abbey Kohler hadn't practiced after going to the hospital Thursday and Kate Wigman was out of town on a college trip.
"We brought up Sam Gerlach from the JV team to set for us and she did a really nice job," said coach Stephanie Eby. "We went from having a good shot at winning it to just doing as well as we could with so many people out."
Ashley Taormina had 19 kills, Candace Salliotte and Brittany Peterson 14 kills, Gerlach 56 assists, Kandus Hogan 48 digs, and Jackie Boggs, Brittany Boggs and Jamie Walker played well all around.
Huron also has been jinxed this year, but its problems are more severe. Six-foot-three Sarah Erwin is out for the year following shoulder surgery, Katelyn Dluzniewski is sidelined with pneumonia, Allison Konkel is out with bronchitis and Meghan Polce is playing with two broken feet.
The Chiefs' Danielle Liparoto had 24 digs and 14 kills, Ashleigh Brewer 23 kills and 11 blocks, Polce 38 digs and Frankie Cordts 22 kills.
