IDA - The opponents who came from out of town to box some of Monroe's finest were good Saturday night.
Maybe too good.
Monroe fighters from Joe's Boxing Club or the Arthur Lesow Community Center lost four of their first five fights in the "Rising Stars Rumble" at Ida American Legion Post 514.
Then Wade Tolle Jr. stepped into the ring. Making his professional debut, the local boxer not only won his match but electrified the crowd with an inspiring performance.
Tolle and Alexis "The Hurricane" Hloros of Detroit staged a four-round brawl that was the best bout of a nine-fight card.
The two came out swinging and the pace of the slugfest never changed. Each fighter threw multiple punches in the super-welterweight match. They would brawl for a long spell, box for a bit, then brawl some more.
Tolle, who fights out of Joe's Boxing Club, won a unanimous decision because he had more at the end. He scored a hard body shot late in the fight that left Hloros hanging on.
"I wish I would have finished him off," Tolle said. "I had him out. I got him with a left hook to the body and he was done."
Tolle had a 20-5 record as an amateur, won three Toledo Gloves titles, scored one Michigan state title and earned a trip to nationals.
"The pace is different (in a pro fight)," he said. "The gloves are a lot smaller, so it's nice."
Monroe's Ryan Wilburn (Joe's) was knocked down by a left hook in the early seconds of his fight but came back to battle William Woods to a draw. One referee scored the fight 38-37 Woods, the other 39-37 Wilburn and the third a 38-38 tie.
Derick Minton (Joe's) also made his pro debut. He started well in the welterweight match but suffered a brutal knockout administered at 2:25 of the second round by Larry Ventis of Detroit.
Their bout had a fight's worth of punches in the first round. Ventis came out on the attack, Minton sidestepped and Ventis ran into the topes.
Minton, who hadn't fought in two years, traded punches with his opponent until Ventis connected with a right-left combination, flooring his opponent with a left hook. Minton lay on the canvas for two minutes before getting up under his own power.
"Why'd they stop it? I'm good," Minton said afterward. "I thought I won the first round."
Brian Mihtar, who has relatives in Monroe, improved his pro record to 5-0 with five knockouts with a fourth-round technical knockout over Guy Packer of Battle Creek.
Austin Watkins (Joe's) was the only Monroe amateur to win. scoring an impressive decision over Eli Garrett of Defiance, Ohio, The Monroe Middle School eighth grader improved his overall record to 11-2.
"I'm not really happy," said Watkins who may have been the only person not satisfied with his performance. "I fought bad. I tried brawling with him, but I'm really a boxer."
Mickey Ford of Monroe (ALCC) lost to Kyle McNutt of Battle Creek in a TKO at the conclusion of the second round. McNutt is 15-0 with 11 KO's.
Austin Watkins (Joe's) lost a decision to Eli Garrett of Defiance. Dylon Minton (Joe's) dropped a decision to Alex Barrientos of Defiance in a good fight. Brandon Wheeler of River Rouge dominated Monroe's Larry Sydenstricker (ALCC) and won by decision.
The Tony Anderson (Joe's) vs. Anthony Willis match was canceled because Willis had been injured in a traffic accident.
The show started 45 minutes late and the "15-minute" intermission lasted nearly an hour, but the show was well received by a good crowd. Another boxing show is planned for Oct. 13 at the Ida American Legion.
