Gabehart selected as Whiteford Schools interim superintendent
Longtime educator Herb Gabehart will become the interim superintendent at Whiteford Agricultural Schools later this month.
The school board approved a contract Monday with Mr. Gabehart to replace Craig Haugen, who is leaving Whiteford Oct. 10 to become the superintendent at Jefferson Schools.
Mr. Gabehart retired as superintendent of Ida Public Schools in 2004 after serving 27 years with the district. He served as interim superintendent for Dundee Community Schools from January to July, 2006, and most recently was interim superintendent at Mason Consolidated Schools.
His contract with Whiteford will run through June 30. Holly Bunge, Whiteford's school board president, said the district will begin the search for a permanent superintendent immediately. The board will work with the Monroe County Intermediate School District to find a replacement.
"We will take some time to do a thorough search," she said. "Our goal would be to find a replacement as soon as possible, but, realistically, we would like to have a new superintendent before next school year."
Mr. Gabehart came highly recommended to the district as an interim superintendent, Mrs. Bunge said.
"We are very pleased," she said. "He is experienced. He knows Monroe County."
Mr. Haugen, 47, accepted the Jefferson superintendent post last month and will begin work with the district Oct. 13. His contract will expire June 30, 2011.
Mr. Haugen has been the superintendent at Whiteford since July 1, 2004. He said accepting a position at a different district was "bittersweet."
"I've appreciated the important work of everyone here in Whiteford," Mr. Haugen said. "At the same time, Jefferson Schools is a larger district, so there will be challenges that come along with a larger district."
Mr. Haugen is replacing Timothy Fitzpatrick, who retired after 25 years with Jefferson.
"I'm looking forward to working with the staff, students and parents to establish a high quality of education."
