There is a long list of schools waiting in line, all anxious to be the first to knock off the Ida boys basketball team.
First up is Flat Rock, which hosts the Blue Streaks tonight.
This might be the most highly anticipated season in Ida history. The Blue Streaks return all five starters from a team that won 20 games a year ago.
"It would be huge if we could knock them off,'' said Flat Rock senior Jake Richardson.
He is a four-year varsity starter, just as Nic Jobe is at Ida. They have been battling in the season opener for their entire careers.
Flat Rock won when Richardson and Jobe were freshmen. Ida has won the last two years.
"I guarded him last year and I think he scored 17 against me,'' Richardson said. "He's difficult to control because of his size and athletic ability.''
Actually, Jobe scored 23 a year ago when Ida beat the Rams 66-61.
Jobe is 6-4 and weighs 215. Richardson is 6-2 and weighs 220.
"He's a tad quicker than me, but if he comes in the post, he's not going to muscle me,'' Richardson said.
Jobe averaged 19.5 points per game last year and already has topped 1,000 for his career with 1,014. Richardson is the third-leading active scorer in the Region with 379 career points. Tim Frost of State Line Christian is second with 472.
Jobe is working on a string of 24 consecutive double-figure scoring games dating back to his sophomore season. He also is an outstanding rebounder and led the Region last season with 10.7 per game. He is being recruited in football and basketball.
Richardson also figures to be a college athlete. He has given a verbal commitment to Oakland University for baseball and expects to sign soon.
Flat Rock returns three starters from a team that went 13-11 and won a District championship under first-year coach Dave Bogataj.
"Last year we had a new coach and were getting used to him when we played Ida,'' Richardson said. "I love Coach Bogataj. He's really easy going. His dad (who serves as a varsity assistant coach) is harder, but I love both of them.''
Tonight's game also will feature two of the Region's top point guards, Andrew Scarton of Flat Rock and Dustin Sielski of Ida. Both are juniors.
