Congrats Marv. You've EARNED your time off. It's hard to believe that you had already been at Ida High 8 years when I first stepped into its halls back in 1977 as a freshman! Ida's Marvin D ick: ‘I had a good run' by Michelle Swartz , last modified July 01. 2010 11:39AM www.monroenews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100701/NEWS01/707019987IDA TOWNSHIP – For Marvin D ick, it's never been about him. During his 41-year tenure at Ida Public Schools, the superintendent for the past six years has kept the focus on the students. "For me, it's always been about the kids," he said from his office last week. "It's the reason we're here. This place was built for the kids, not us. That's why the focus should be on the students." So when his staff wanted to plan a farewell party for his retirement that officially began Wednesday, he wanted nothing to do with the fanfare. "I don't need to be in the spotlight. I would rather fade off," the 63-year-old said. "Life goes on (after retirement)." But his career in education is difficult to ignore. This year marked his 41st year with the district. He began his career teaching math for nine years, then became the high school assistant principal and athletic director for nine years. He then served the next 17 years as high school principal. This past school year marked his sixth year as the district's superintendent. Years ago, he also coached football and also supervised a state-funded summer migrant program. "There's really not much to it other than it was time," he said about his decision to retire. "I had a good run."

I personally never liked that man and he clearly didn't like me. I'm sure that he was one of my dad's students at Ida and he knows all of my family very well, especially my oldest brother Mark. I being the youngest often ended up the proud owner of so many unknown legacies and unsettled contentions at Ida that were just handed to me and I simply had to endure but there was never any loss of affection there as was the case with so many on and off staff, in and around the community and all over the bloody county. It had nothing to do with my father or family who are fine people but with Ida! I've lived and travelled all over the world, speak 3 languages, have a degree and a 180IQ and I think I have a clue after 30+ years.
