CHELSEA - There was no mystery why Ida won its Class B District basketball opener Monday night.
The tall Blue Streaks simply out-talented Erie Mason 46-19 in a methodical contest dominated by defense.
Ida was without starting guard Rachel Sepesy who probably is out for the season with an ACL tear.
But Kesley DeLand smoothly slipped in as the other starter and Kari Honomichl came off the bench to produce 9 points and a game-high 7 rebounds for the Blue Streaks.
Host Chelsea delivered the second shellacking of the night, pulling away from Milan 52-27 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Ida scored the first 13 points of its game and was up 18-2 early in the second quarter. Mason never again got closer than 12 points.
"We haven't played defense that well all year," said Blue Streaks coach Tim Leonard. "We're playing a little more physical now with bump and cutters on the way through. Kari Honomichl came off the bench and did an excellent job."
Erin Bentley scored all 10 of her points in the first half and Kyrie Cramer shook off an ankle sprain to score a game-leading 11 points. Kayla Spotts added 6 rebounds.
Leonard said his team was a little subdued Friday when it learned that Sepesy's knee injury - suffered in a nonleague game at St. Mary Catholic Central Thursday - was serious. She is the only senior on the squad.
"Yesterday when we met for our shoot-around the mood was a little bit better," he said. "We had to play three games without her earlier in the season, so the girls are used to filling in. Rachel's been great. Through all of this, she's been here supporting us."
Danielle Smith led 8-13 Mason with 8 points, but no one else scored more than 4. Kelly Cousino added 5 rebounds.
"I'm not really happy with how we played, but you've got to give some of the credit to Ida. They're a tough basketball team," said Mason coach Bryan Parran. "I thought we played better in the second half. I'm not sure why.
"We've struggled with Ida the last four or five games. Our talent level is down and they're a talented team. Mentally, I don't know if the girls believe they can beat them."
He said Kelly and Kayla Cousino played well in their final varsity games.
Milan found 33 turnovers too much to overcome in a fast-paced game. Chelsea pressed for the first three quarters and the Big Reds were able to attempt just 25 shots. They trailed only 9-7 late in the first quarter but did not hit another field goal until the third quarter.
Nicole Greer led 4-17 Milan with 9 points, Stephanie Roe scored 7, Lani Ernst led with 5 rebounds and Chelsey Green played well.
"That (Chelsea) is one very good basketball team," said coach Scott Stark. "They all have a match-up, and they all do their jobs. When you get five on the floor working as a unit, you're going to be pretty tough to beat."
He said the Big Reds "have struggled with turnovers all year. We had 52 turnovers in one game. Instead of just saying forget it, the girls worked hard and cut them down. What's really nice is we have some good players coming up off our JV team that was 15-5 this year. We'll be back. That's the good thing about this job."
Ida (16-5) advances to play Flat Rock (11-9) in Wednesday's 5:30 p.m. semifinal at Chelsea. Brooklyn Columbia Central (12-8) faces the 15-6 Bulldogs in the nightcap. The final is at 7 p.m. Friday.
